What was graphic design like before computers?

What did the process on creating an ad involve, materials, printing or publishing methods.

Please no answers saying "they drew everything" that is obvious people!!!

Any websites that are not wikipedia would be very welcome and also some old ads or old designers that started before computers like James Victore

for example

the term cut and paste meant exactly that.

a photo was cut out, edges thinned and then pasted down.

Type has been set in many ways - depending on the printing technique. Some type faces and sizes were hand set - each letter was picked from the appropriate drawer. these letters were made of wood and then later lead.

see flickr.com and search vintage ads and then surf

good luck
