How do virus-writers keep their scripts from infecting their own computers?

I PROMISE I'm not writing malicious script, :-) but I was just running a virus scan on my laptop, and I got to wondering how hackers and other such people can write viruses that don't infect their own computers. I would assume there's sort of a reverse process that would keep their own computers safe that would also be a key in protecting others' computers as well? This seemed so ironic about virus writers not being affected by the scripts they write that I thought I'd ask.

Yes... take it apart and sell it part by part on eBay. Make sure that the parts are working else you may have to list them as-is which isn't very good marketing wise.

Depends on why they don't work anymore. There's a lot of good parts in a tower. Just because it doesn't work does not usually mean that the entire tower is worthless.

Possible good parts: Fans, SATA wires, ribbons, cpu, chips, memory sticks, etc.
yes im sure there is but if your selling something that doesnt work then you need to add that fact in your add other wise you are going to have an angry buyer. take them to a used place because then at least they may be able to take it apart and use the poarts to rebuild a new one for themselves

Anything that is web based like Yahoo can be logged into from any computer and from any numder of pc's at the some time. with no booting problems. Yahoo does not care.

At one time if someone logged onto your mail while you were in it, you would get notice that you were logged off and onto another machine. But not anymore. I was in my mail account and she logged into my mail and it did not tell me nor boot me from it. This should not be allowed to happen. Report It

First of all, it's not wise to clean children and hard drives at the same time, due to risk of electrical shock.

As for XP, no, you can't use the same copy of xp on multiple computers.

A switch would be a better choice. A hub divides the speed by the number of ports ( for 100mbs each port gets a little more than 12mbs) and a switch gives each port the full 100mbs.

All you need to do is run windows update and it will change the operating system settings to the new DST schedule.

It should just change on its own still, since I don't see why it would matter if it's in October or November. That shouldn't affect it at all.
If you're connected to the internet, (and have windows), I'm sure Microsoft will figure something out. Otherwise, you could just change it manually.

All the answers are right. If your Windows OS is ME or later, Windows has updated the time change. So if you have kept up with the Windows updates, your computer will have the right time.

If your printer has a NIC card, you can use a wireless router to connect to the printer. Then you can just install the drivers on each of the computers and set it up as a wireless network through that router.

If the printer does not have a nic, then you can get a separate print server and follow the directions they give you to set this up.

Another option that works, and I use, is to take an old computer (like a PII or something you would not actually use) strip it down to bare bones, and install the printer on it. Connect that printer to a wireless router with a Static IP. then wireless network into it sharing the printer out on that old computer. That is the cheap yet useful way to do it. Good luck!

I am assuming your printer is attached to at least one PC. Okay on that PC goto control panel %26gt; printers and fax. Now right click on the printer find sharing - allow sharing. On your other PC that is connected wirelessly goto control panel and add a printer - browse to the printer that should now be showing on your network. The software will load across your network.

It is almost impossible to predict two centuries ahead at this point with any accuracy whatsoever.

Consider that in 1807 (two centuries ago), the steam engine was unheard of by the majority of the world's population, and medical science still had little clue of the concept of sterilization. Nobody in 1807 could have come even CLOSE to where we are today. Nobody in 1907, not even Jules Verne, could have predicted what we have in 2007. Hell, in 1985 I was completely wrong about 2007.

Is it likely, though, in my opinion for computers to have developed true AI by 2007? I think that they will have the semblance of it. Perhaps they'll be able to hold conversations with people and APPEAR intelligent. They'll also be able to come out with brilliant flashes of insight that can only come from massive calculation.

But ultimately, they won't be truly intelligent, or self aware in any sense that we could understand. Any feelings would simply be simulated, just like the feelings of a character in a video game today. Our interactions will, however, probably treat many of those computers as true individuals. That is because we are egocentric. We have no awareness of anybody outside ourself, so our awareness of a computer and a human soul offer the same level of insight into the inside for both - absolutely none. Thus we can transfer our feelings of life, emotion, and consciousness onto both human and computer alike, when our observations show them to be the same - whether they are truly the same or not.

Yes there is, its called Step Mania. You can either buy a pad for computers or simply buy a controller adapter and use a console pad.

I asked a question about sharing a folder on two computers, and someone was kind enough to tell me the 2 ip addresses must be in the same network.

I've had a class in networking and I know about subnetting. From what I understand, "same network" means "same subnet".

What I don't understand is right now I have 2 computers.

The first one is a laptop which is assigned an ip address automatically. The second one is a desktop which also has an ip address assigned automatically.

1.How do I make the 2 ip addresses belong to the same subnet?

If I assign new ip addresses to my 2 machines by putting in ip address at TCP/IP properties, wouldn't that mess up my internet connection?

2.In order to figure out the range of each of the subnet, you need to know whether it's /24, /28, /30, etc (I don't remember exactly what this /value is called). How do you find out which /value applies to your network?

This will display your ip address.

You;re likely on a home router and I will take a stab and assume they are already on the same class c network 192.168.x.x

I've noticed some people watch TV or use their computers with their lights off . I've never thought about it -- I just naturally have the lights on . Didn't Thomas Edison invent the light bulb so we didn't have to sit in the dark ? Isn't it easier to see the keyboard with the lights on ? What if you want to write a letter while you're watching TV ? Isn't watching TV or playing with your computer with the lights off basically pointless .?

It's not pointless. Often it will give dramatic effect to a movie. It also makes it easier to concentrate when everything else BUT the tv is drowned out in darkness, which makes that movie a focal point. Also, glare on the screen is another reason why people will close the curtains and turn the light off. My tv and computer screens are hell like that. With less light, you don't strain your eyes as much.

But once you get used to the feel of a keyboard, typing becomes instinctive and you don't need to see what you are pressing. If the game requires complex keystrokes though, people will be more likely to use more light.

If both computers are networked using your router. Enter router firmware and make sure you configure an option for the router to assign pirvate ip numbers for home networks.

Check both computers are in the same subnet %26 workgroup

Computer A 192.168.0.7 255.255.0.0

Computer B 192.162.0.9 255.255.0.0

In this example Computers A %26 B have different IP numbers using the same subnet. Thus they will not communicate well because the subnets prevent the 2 IP numbers to see one another in a private home network.

By changing computer B to 192.168 and then the computers are on the same subnet and should be able to network as well as being in the same workgroup.

The 255 means match number exactly

0 means wild card any number from 1 to 255

Example Subnet 255.255.255.0 - tells computer tcp/ip only to communicate to this level/group of ip numbers/

Which translates to an group of ip numbers with an exact match of 192.168.0.

the 1st 3 digits of the ip must be exact.since the first 3 numbers of subnet are 255.255.255.. then 4th number since the 4th number in the subnet is 0 which tells the computer to accept any number between 1 to 255

When the F10 / F11 option is detected, the computer boots to this hidden partition and begins the restore process which will restore the machine to a "new box" state. If this functionality / partition is present, you should be able to the restore you are referring to. The state that computer should be returned to is the same as what it was when you first got it.

I got an older Pentium 200 Mhz with 24mb of ram running the lastest version of slackware (10.2) great right now, and using the fluxbux xwindows system.

The difficulty with older computers is going to be mostly the XWindows GUI system you can work with. KDE and Gnome both now need a good amount of ram, but there are other xwindows systems. Also, ofcourse, older computer's BIOS often don't support booting from the CD...then you are faced with messing with boot disks (which is fine, but more work). Most Distros these days are really focused on the CD booters.

Puppy Linux and Slax are both lightweight Linux Live scripts that have versions for older computers:

Slackware is always a very versatile option, it's what I went with for the older computer (I used the floppy startdisks). It's also easy to choose not to install larger programs and KDE apps you can't use anyways. But you will be dealing a lot with the scary command prompt text mode. yes you can install the Sims 2 on your laptop....i did. you can install any of them on a laptop, not just the stories ones that were made "laptop friendly".

just check to make sure that it will be compatible with your laptop. the sims 2 requires 256 MB of RAM (512 MB of RAM if more than 5 expansion packs or stuff packs are installed). Operating systems supported for Windows are XP, Me, 2000, or 98. CPU has to be 1.3 GHz or faster. your hard drive needs at least 1.5 GB of free space.

It can be used for laptops but will work better on a computer. I would definitly go for the Sims Stories. They're made for laptops.
If the laptop wasn't designed for gaming you might not be able to play it. Make sure the specs of the laptop meet the game requirements.

If your laptop doesn't meet the specs for the full game you might want to check out the Stories series (Life Stories, Pet Stories, Castaway Stories which isn't out yet). They were designed for laptop play.
Easiest way to know is to check the system requirements, usually on the bottom of the box somewhere.

They were laid out on a board, either with stick on letters, written on or letraset. They were then filmed with a rostrum camera which is used in animation. It is a locked off camera that doesnt move and which films one frame a second.

I used to have a set up like that with plastic letters that I used to make credits for my 8mm films 30 years ago.

Every computer needs to have to same network name when startin it with windows. Exampe : Mshome1. If each computer has the same network name u should be able to start a network.

Just get a print server and connect it that way. If you have an ethernet port on the printer just use a router and connect it all to the computers through a network.
The best thing would certainly be a wireless router since it has the capablity to br wired as well.
I think the best solution would be a networking router. Even wireless routers usually have enough ports built into them so that you can connect things the traditional way. You would have all of pc's and the printer connected to the router. This would in effect set you up a little local area network, and you should be able then to have the pc's all be able to send print jobs to the MFP.

This can get a bit tricky at times. Assuming to have Windows XP Ptofessional here's what you do:

First, enable file sharing:

- Go to Control Panel

- Folder Options

- Uncheck Simple File Sharing at the bottom on both operating systems.

- Now go to the file you want to share and right click and select properties.

- Click The sharing tab and select the sharing option.

- Name the folder what its shared name will be.

- Go to the security tab and click 'Everyone' and check the 'Full Control' box, or what ever applies.

Go to the Control Panel:

Windows Firewall

If its turned on uncheck the don't allow exceptions box.

Check File and Printer Sharing.

Do this to both computers. Now your half way there. Both computers have to be connected to a router, either wireless or wired. If you don't have them hooked up to a router then you'll have topurchase one and mabe some adapters if you want some computers to connect wirelessly.

Right-Click My Computer.

- Select Properties.

This is driving me nuts. I have a computer network in Vietnam (I am in the US) and there are three computers on the local network that suddenly cannot see our domain on the internet (not the local). All are running Windows XP in DHCP with Firefox and Thunderbird clients.... three of the four cannot browse via http or connect via pop to our domain on the web (www.cpi.org)... while one computer can can... It sounds like either a DNS or DHCP issue to me.

Either the three nonfunctional computers are using a different DNS server (or servers) than the one that is working, and that DNS server has ceased to operate, or else the one that is working still has an IP address, while the 3 nonfunctional ones lost their IPs when their leases expired, and for some reason are unable to acquire new ones.

More details would be helpful - for example:

- Can the computers all "see" one another?

- Can some or all of the computers ping the servers in question by IP address? by name?

- have you confirmed that all the PCs have apropriate IP addresses?

56 GB is an odd sized hard drive. It's probably a 60 GB drive. You didn't mention the processor speed. That is one of the important factors in determining the price. Also you will have a better chance of selling it if it's a laptop. Not too many people want to buy a used desktop system. Even though Windows XP and Office 2003 are worth some money, it will be tough to find a buyer. I'm guessing the processor is probably around 2 GHZ. I'd say you may get $150 US at the most. I'm not sure how that translates to your currency.

Assuming these are Windows computers, in addition to internet connection sharing, you have to specifically share the directory (folder) or drive that you want visible to the other computer. You can do this by bringing up Windows Explorer, right-clicking on the directory or drive in question and selecting "Sharing and Security". Here you can define the properties of how you would like the data shared (ie. full access, read only, password controlled, ect).

It would make more sense if they were fixed in position, rather than circulating. For several reasons:

Attaching them to circulating red cells would change the shape of the red blood cell and quite possibly cause alterations in their movement through capillaries. Case in point:

sickle cell anemia:

The red blood cells, in the presence of reduced oxygen tension, change to a difficult to circulate sickle shape (hence the name), causing, in addition to pain, hypoxic changes in the tissues distal to the point of impaired circulation. The result is often microinfarctions. Not a good thing.

Better plan for the nanocomputers would be to fix them close to their target organ. If they were to communicate with the brain, then implant them there or nearby. If they were to increase a particular organ's output or function, then attach them there.

Port forwarding to your x-box correctly should have no affect on other computers on your network.

Port forwarding is necessery when you access the internet through a router.

When one of your computers wants to make a connection to the internet (e.g. a website) there's no problem - it can see the website and connects to it through the router.

The problem is when other people want to connect to one of your computers - all they have is your IP address, and your IP address directs to your router, not to any of your computers.

So, the solution is "port forwarding" - a very simple rule you set up on your router, that tells it that incoming connection attempts on any port should go to one computers on your network.

So, if I want to connect to your x-box, even though your IP address points to your router, if I try to connect on port 6000, and you've set up a rule on your router that says "all incoming connection attempts on port 6000 should be forwarded to my x-box", then there's no problem.

I have tried this with warcraft 3, it will work with as many computers, but when you start it up with one just take out the disc and put it in the next machine. Taking the disc out during gameplay wont effect anything, because the game is installed to the hard drive, but like a x-box does not install the whole game, it just plays it off of the disc. Also try something called Daemon Tools it will let you boot up the game without the disc, but i dont think you would want to go online in the game.

Yes with a crossover cable. Unless one of the network adapters can auto detect a ad-hoc connection. Then use a standard patch cable.

You may not have sharing setup correctly on one machine.

You may have something like ZoneAlarm running which is blocking access.

Unless you have been "playing" with your router settings, it is unlikely that it is to blame.

You can do two things...

The easiest is to right-click on the Internet Explorer icon and choose "Properties" from the popup menu. When the "Internet Properties" dialog comes up, click the "Delete Files" button, followed by the "Clear History" button. This will remove the history of your web surfing from Internet Explorer.

Now if you want to be extra paranoid, you may want to remove all traces that you've done anything. What files you've opened, what programs you've run, etc, etc.

The way you do this is to get "Windows Defender" from Microsoft. It's their free spyware removal tool, which has some really nice footprint removal features!

I have 3 computers at home and 2 web cam's. Computers A %26 B can get Superweb cam between each other, but computer C cannot. It always says unavalible. I just finished re-installing windows XP because I really was hoping it would fix it, but it didn't. I ran a DSLReports.com speed test and it says 1321-kbps upload %26 350-kbps download.

Your problem is more likely spyware installed on the machine by the porn sites, and not the browser. IF FireFox is slow, anything Microsoft will crawl.

Download Spybot:Search %26 Destroy and see how many spyware programs are eating up your resources. Spyware can bring a system to it's knees very quickly. And most anti-virus programs are useless against spyware.

I think we are more like computers than some would like to admit. I was talking with a friend who's a computer scientist the other night and he was telling me how the new genetic testing and therapies that are being developed are very much like computer science.
