Action to Support Orphans and Disadvantaged (ASOD) Uganda started in 2004 May, as a grassroots charity. On the 26th July 2005 the organization was officially mandated by the laws of Uganda to be a local non-government organization (NGO) working within slum areas of Kampala , with its head office at Kyebando central. The organization came into existence as the first pioneering organization to deal with the plight of kids and community orphaned by the pandemic. ASOD has propelled the initiative of HIV AIDS research work in Ugandan and other development work for social transformation of orphan societies. The organization works are supported by the community services and the management of the organization.
The computers donation is meant for the Millennium College School (Orphans Computer Literacy Project). The project will enable the students and community to enquire computer skills that can empower them to be self reliant. Any adive that enable us ship the computers will be nice.

I was told by a friend that repeatedly playing DVD movies and TV shows on my computer would damage the DVDs (not the drives) because DVD drives on computers spin much faster than they do on TV DVD players. I've been planning to get an iMac to use as a TV and a computer but he says I need a separate DVD player so I don't destroy my DVDs. He says watching a DVD on a new computer as few as 5 times will destroy the disc because it is spun so fast. Can that possibly be true? I can't find ANYTHING supporting his theory...

About the only thing that could happen is if the disc was cracked or warped, then the high speed may cause the disc to disintegrate.

I have to maintain a large number of computers at work and here is what i want to do: I install Windows XP. Then, i customize it. Like disabling the screensaver, enabling quick launch, setting computer%26desktop properties and so on. Well, how can i "record" all this with a program that generates an .exe file or a .vbs or whatever, so i can port all my customization to other computers running a clean installation of Windows XP? So i don't have to do it manually all the time in all those computers that i have to set...

You can do this a number of ways...
You can build one computer to your liking. Then you create an image of the computer using a program like Acronis True Image. You can then image all the other computers using the image of the original. This is beneficial because you won't need to go through the windows installation on all the other PCs. Note - You can only image computers (without many more steps) of the same hardware specs.
Another way to do this is to use the "File and settings transfer wizard". Export the settings to a cd or other external device. Then on the other PCs import the settings using the same wizard. If any of the machines are PRE XP you will need the XP installation disc for this wizard.

I don't know about your situation exactly, buy my husband got a router from walmart and it hooks up easily with some cat 5 cable, and the software took only a few minutes to install. It works great for us on a cable modem. Its also nice because we are still independent of each other, so one computer can be shut off and the other will still be able to use the net.
Try using a router! 25 $ but it works great, and I don't think by law u can have 2 connected just like that! im not sure u should check with ur Phone/cable co. to make sure!
I've noticed Levino notebook computers at mass merchants like Best Buy, Circuit City and Office Depot for about a year and some. They seem competitively priced but who are they? Generally Toshiba and Sony are regarded as the machines of choice over HP and Compaq. Where would Levino stand between thes eother mfg's? I have Lenovo N100 bought last year, when Core due was introduced, The SW features are very good, but the Key board is horrible and also the speakers are bad in class.
My Hard disc was broken and sent to service centre and they replaced for free. Service is very good.
Other than that they are sturdy most use full for business purpose, but if you thinking of buying Thinkpad from Lenovo then it is all together a different experience, I used T40 for 2 1/2 years w/o any issues great machine but after 2 1/2 years hard disc was broken.

In my home there is a Wireless ADSL router, which my dad's computer (about 50m away) connects to from outside. Because of the suspected harmful effects of the wireless signal, I want to minimise the effects of the router while my dad's computer is off, and for this I want to use an ethernet cable (which connects into the back of the router) for the various computers in the house.
So, my question is this. If I have the router on but am only using my ethernet cable to connect to it, is it sending out a signal?

To turn it off and still use the cable plugged into the router, you need to access the router settings to disable the wireless.
But each time he wants to use it again, you would need to turn it on again...

A lot of it is advertising for Mac, which is designed for high-end graphics. Advertising agencies use them a lot because that is what Macs are made for. Movies usually advertise a certain product, like the Ford Mustang in many of the older movies with chase scenes.
Because they are the best!! They have a lot of programs you'd need installed automatically, but also, the apple has the most innovative design, operating system, and seamless communication between your devices or other computers, no viruses, and most of the stuff you'll do on there (like movies and photos) is a lot cooler and easier than on a PC. Mac's are the best...hands down.

I've got 2 computers, a desktop and a laptop. I now only use the laptop. My ipod is currently synched to the desktop PC and that is where I have all my mp3 and aac files. It all worked fine but suddenly I can't see the network. Sure they can. And there's lots of them too. The best money comes from people who write programs(create software). If you're pretty good at it and have a B.S. or M.S you can make 100K+. If you're really good at it and have an M.S. or PhD you can make 200K+.
There's lots of jobs for people who maintain networks but the money's not quite as good, although you can still make a living at it.
Some of them do and some of them don't - it depends on what you are doing. If you are an electronic engineer you can make a lot of money. If it is data entry, not so much. I've heard that programmers that know how to write code for "Java" can make $70,000 a year. So yes, you can make a lot of money, but it depends on your level of skill, and the demand for what you are doing. Good luck!

Have you optimized your computer lately? have you done a FULL virus scan lately? are you dial up or DSL etc? sometimes our Internet provider is having some problems so you might want to check with them just to see if things are running smoothly on there end.

My FIRST computer was given to me by a friend who purchased a new one. That was in 2003. I thought it was the greatest thing! The only "bad luck" I had was my addictive nature took over, and I couldn't get off of it for a year-and-a-half!
Eventually, it slowed down so much that I had to get rid of it. My next computer was new, and I couldn't believe how fast it ran! But eventually, it slowed down, too.
I am now on my third computer. Had it now for about 10 months, and I just love it. Haven't had a lick of trouble YET. Over all, I'm going to say that I have good luck.
I've heard that Macintosh computers can't get viruses and they never crash. Does anyone know differently from personal experience?
It's been several years since a virus has been written for a Mac. Comparing the amount of viruses written for Macs and for PCs is like comparing a puddle to the Pacific Ocean.
Macs are much less prone to crash than PCs. Macs have filesystem that is not affected by fragmentation, and the user interface is much cleaner and easier to use.

Mac is a small target for virus writers; they mostly go after the PC machines.
Some of the early versions of Mac were a bit glitchy, but the code now is well thought out and written better. PC OS is developed quickly and rushed to market and the code is full of security holes...hense more prone to viruses and hacking.

I have three laptops that all have file sharing enabled through our home wireless network and am setting up my desktop right now. I cannot for the life of me remember how I allowed the other computers to share their hard drives. I viewed my wireless network properties (where I thought I did it before) and I can't find it. Please help me. I want all my laptops to have access to my desktop's hard drive via my wireless network.

To access your desktop's hard drive (and you have simple file sharing disabled), you right click on your hard drive and click on Sharing and Security. Enable sharing, and put in whatever share name you would like to use. You can also allow the write permission through this dialog box if you want to save work from your laptops onto your desktop.
The next step is to make sure that all 4 PCs are in the same workgroup. To find this out right click My Computer and go to Properties. Under the Computer Name tab you will find what workgroup you are currently a part of. If they are not the same, click on Change in that dialog box and change them all to the same workgroup.
Then you can map a drive on your laptops to have your desktop's hard drive on your laptops. To do this right click on My Computer and go to Map Network Drive. Choose a drive letter and for the shared resource type in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\shared_name. The x's stand for your desktop's IP address. Then click finish and then in My Computer you should see a drive for your desktop's hard drive.

Use your Firewall to block all messenger from accesing the Internet. They can't change that if they don't know the password.

OK. Im only 16 BUT...I play Unreal after pepband with my SCHOOL BAND AND BAND INSTRUCTER!!! We avrage about 15 to 30 players and we play off of a server through the schools LAN. Only one disk has ever been used. Get a computer to act as a server and you can both play until you puke your keyboard up. GOOD LUCK
No, But the UT demo should support LAN and not require a CD Key. I know Quake 3 works.
The game is copied entirely to the Hdd when installed, but the CD is just used for authenticity. Once UT is loaded (the menu loads) swap the CD into the other PC and load it.

If you want to become independent of isp's you must become yourself an isp. This is way, WAY above your finances and expertise.
You don't need a totally separate Internet connection...what it sounds like you want is an Intranet or network. You can still have access to the Internet, but certain access would be limited only to those with access granted. Microsoft has a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client that does this, though it's quite finicky. I set up one at home and it took forever to link Windows 98, 2000, XP with Vista (mind you the old OS worked flawlessly). So you can access the network from anywhere.
If you're connecting to the internet, you'll need an ISP (internet service provider).

Because it means that you cannot search for the word. Although it doesn't prevent you from using weapon, assault or any other of the myriad of violent words out there.
And schools, even public ones, do have the right to block information, if they believe that the actions of a group will endanger another group.
Additionally, there are so many other places students can access a computer off school grounds that they are not restricted from. And students can certainly use real books and magazine to find the info they want.

Cause as I know the router divides the speed of the internet depending on how many computers are connected. Unfortuantly, you didn't supply enough information for a more specific answer. Here is a basic run-down though
It doesnt matter if your computers are on wireless or wired, the computers can't tell the difference. You do need to make sure that all your computers are on the same WORKGROUP name.
Hopefully you run Windows XP, then you just open CONTROL PANEL and double click SYSTEM. There will be a COMPUTER NAME tab, click that. Make sure that all the computers have the same WORKGROUP name, if some do not, click CHANGE and type the correct name in.
After all the computers are named under the same workgroup then you can share files. On the PC or PCs you want to share hard drives, open MY COMPUTER, then right click the C drive or folders within the C drive and choose SHARING. Follow the prompts and then your computer will be visible by the other PCs.
To access the shared drives from the other computers. Click START, then click RUN. Under run type "\\COMPUTERNAME" (no quotes, and replace COMPUTERNAME with the actual PC name under the COMPUTER NAME tab in control panel). The share should be visible.
okay, i have 10 computers in my room (yeah.. no @#$%).. they are old and it's time to get rid of them. what's the easiest way of destroying the hard-drivers namely while still protecting confidentiality and important information that might still be on them.

Well, perhaps getting a hammer and smashing the hard drive good enough that it would be impossible to retrieve data....or......wipe the drive(s) completely clean of ALL the data and give them to someone who needs it. :)
Along with the comment about the Dban software. I know of this product that also does a similar thing. It is not free but they give you a money back warranty. Check it out.

I would say that you can securely erase the hard drives and give away the computers to a charity or a school. Install one of the Linux distributions for free and teach some younger or older generations some basic computing skills. Give back to the community! DBAN is a free program to securely erase a hard disk. Just download, burn to cd, boot the computer from the cd and erase the disks!
Open up the hard drives and hit the chips in it with a hammer. This way, it can't be repaired. Close the hard drive and go to your local Best Buy or electronics store. You can look at they're computer disposal programs and go for it.

I manage a network of 10 PC's. We have been recently blocked from sending emails to a few domains. Afer performing a full and thorough virus scan on my computers and server, we still seem to be blocked. Is there a tool (free preferably) that i can set up to only allow SMTP traffic to originate from my email server?
your network will have a router or a firewall ( or both ) that will allow you to set up access list - you need to set up a filter that only allows your email server to send smtp traffic - ( all other devices will get their email from this server ) - also worth making sure that your server isnt configured as an smtp open relay .. as it could be used by spamers to relay messages and may be the reason your are being blacklisted ( you need to ensure that youre mail server only forwards email from addresses on your network - or that have been authenticated ) search for open relays or spaming
From what you have said I do not think that a virus is your problem. You say that you manage a network of 10 pcs? Did you inform your ISP of this as it could be against your contract?
This may be the reason that port 25 has been blocked.
If you want to run servers, then you may need to upgrade to business account, where there are no such blocks.

If you where in the USA I would have told you to get to be a registered non profit organization and try to find a company that is throwing away their old equipment to make room for newer one. The purpose of being a registered non profit is that the company can claim tax benefits from the donation. You could have the same to donations.
Since you are in Africa, things are more difficult. Much fraud comes from that country and people are hesitant to help. If your church affiliated with any mayor movement, ask them for help.

I also agree on the dna system. This procedure is fairly new (if u compare it to the years the criminal system has been in existance) and yet it has been able to solve many crimes around the world. Even cold or even closed cases that at the time seemed to have no solution.

These tools will need to pass rigid validity tests and be acceptable as evidence in criminal cases.

You can use the DVD as many times as you like, but your product key will only work on one system..

We are studying the information processing cycle in my computers class and i need a brief description on how it operates from when you turn the computer on to when you finish printing a document and shut it down. I would appreciate it if somebody helped me out.
I cant exactly answer in a few words. First when you turn your computer on it goes through it's post. That is when it checks out all of the hardware inside to ensure it is working properly. You have probably at least seen the RAM count on your screen. that is part of the post. Then your bootsrap loader loads the operating system files stored on your hard drive. Once inside your operating system you generally use RAM and Storage (Hard Drive) to run programs. The difference between the two is Storage stores programs and RAM allows you to alter any given program. For example... When you start Microsoft Word your computer must go into your hard drive and pull up the files to run the program. Once you are typing in a document you are using RAM. It allows you to minipulate the document and record your changes accordingly. Shutting down is a matter of just turning off your computer. That is the best short answer I can provide. If you want more info than that I would suggest taking An A+ course.

If that's what you want, fine, BUT, then I challenge you to go work in that environment where you have limited management tools, where inmates have little to do with their time but to figure out ways to hurt you and the rest of their lives to do it with.
If you believe prisons should operate only as human warehouses that punish people, then no. However, since punishment does not stop crime nearly as well as reforming people does, then educational materials including computers should be available.
I don't believe prisoners should have access to chat/blogs/email etc as they generally serve no educational purpose.
Not only that.. they should have a bed, a toilet, and no other items, contact of any kind with anyone (except their lawyer), and never be let out of the cell (except maybe a once a week supervised shower), until they're dead and in the ground.
No, and they should go back to a single common room TV with limited amount of time to watch. I have no problems with newspapers or magazines as long as the inmate is paying for the subscription.
