okay, i have 10 computers in my room (yeah.. no @#$%).. they are old and it's time to get rid of them. what's the easiest way of destroying the hard-drivers namely while still protecting confidentiality and important information that might still be on them.

Well, perhaps getting a hammer and smashing the hard drive good enough that it would be impossible to retrieve data....or......wipe the drive(s) completely clean of ALL the data and give them to someone who needs it. :)

Along with the comment about the Dban software. I know of this product that also does a similar thing. It is not free but they give you a money back warranty. Check it out.

I would say that you can securely erase the hard drives and give away the computers to a charity or a school. Install one of the Linux distributions for free and teach some younger or older generations some basic computing skills. Give back to the community! DBAN is a free program to securely erase a hard disk. Just download, burn to cd, boot the computer from the cd and erase the disks!
Open up the hard drives and hit the chips in it with a hammer. This way, it can't be repaired. Close the hard drive and go to your local Best Buy or electronics store. You can look at they're computer disposal programs and go for it.
