What are the most essential basic skills for working with computers?

I have a BM, a teaching certificate, %26 5 yrs. exp. as a teacher. For the last 2 years, I've been at home with my children, but soon I'll be heading back into the workfield. Since I'm not interested in teaching again, I've considered pursuing computers or writing/editing, two things I'm interested in.

My knowledge of computers is totally piecemeal, and while I'm certain I would do well at it with the proper training and education, I need to know what direction to look to develop the right skills for potential work situations.

Just today I discovered html tags, and I wondered how long something that simple and basic had eluded me. I've assembled PCs, I have creaded 3d models, textured and animated them with Blender. I've developed game mods for Morrowind (and others), imported objects, and played with scripting.

I've got no programming experience. What is most essential? What other areas do I need to develop? How important is computer certification?

Further education/certification would be great, but there are "entry level" positions available. "On the job training" is not as common as it used to be, but it still exists. You need to decide what you actually want to pursue, as it sounds like you've dabbled in quite a variety of related yet very different fields. You may be able to land a job plus attend classes part-time (at night maybe?).

Depending on the size of the hard drives in the two computers if you were to create your own little network you could create a folder on each one to hold a backup of important data from the other computer. That way, if you got in the habit of backing up the important data to the other computer if either system should happen to crash you would at least have a copy of the most important data on the other computer.

However, you don't have to do that if you don't want to. You can still create a small network for other reasons. I have 8 computers at home, because two are notebooks (one for me and my wife that we use every day), then the others have a variety of other OS and other configurations. I have found that if you try to have one Windows computer do too much, you end up with more problems than you can shake a stick at. So, I have one computer just for video editing. I have another one for playing Windows XP games. Another one for Windows 98 games, and so on.

Do web search on Virtual Private Networking. That is what you are trying to achieve. However you will need some kind of a third party software to get there.

Usual file sharing can be done through yahoo messenger and limewire type clinets, and games can be played by logging onto same web servers. But to transfer files directly amongst computers and play games over internet as if it were on your local LAN you would need to set up a VPN.

Windows XP has a built in home network feature... that is, if you are talking about two computers in your home. You will have to either connect both computers to a router or connect them directly using a crossover cable. Then, go to Control panel and run the network setup wizard on both compters.
You can actually transfer files using MSN Messenger or Skype. I'm not sure if you can do with Yahoo Messenger.

Hmmm - a wireless router (better yet, a gateway router, which is an ADSL modem and router combined) is ALWAYS the best option, but ensure you are using via ethernet (LAN ports) rather than via usb.

The problem with using a host PC as a server is that:

a) That PC will ALWAYS need to remain on for your network connection to be live

b) becomes an easier network system to hack - better a router %26 model with a built in NAT firewall - much harder for a hacker to penetrate.

Although it isn't legal, you can install your copy of XP on another computer. I think the thresh hold is 5, but I know you can at least install it on 2. This is a violation of the licensing agreement and you will be in trouble when the Microsoft Police knock on your door. I think you can get the death penalty for it or something.

Check to make sure you are on the proper workgroup. Right click my computer choose properties and choose the computer name tab. Make sure you are on the right work group.

Then check to see that you have print and file sharing turned on. Lastly take a look at the firewall and make sure you have it set to allow print and file sharing.

I suppose it is possible to have a virus written to do that, but not worth anyones time to make. Typically, when you run into a situation when a computer needs to be updated, it's a rather specific situation, ie., a game you want to play that requires more RAM, or you require a faster graphics card, or something like that.

They way you have worded it, I'm wondering if you are just unhappy with the performance of the current system.

I for one, am a firm believer in what is called an operating system's half life. I download often, install, and uninstall software, and am constantly moving files beween drives, and ultimately this turns the registry into something akin to spaghetti.

With my current systems, I have a boot drive, and then I have seperate storage drives, therefore, I can format my system about every 6 months with little problem. That cures things like freezing, loosing performance, too much time booting, and other cooties that generally occur over time.

WHEN you become a big success (note I did not say IF :) )and you might have many people coming to and from your home in certain areas you MIGHT have a zoning problem with the business in the home.

Make sure you have both liability insurance, people will be coming to your home, and errors and ommissions insurance for when you make a mistake with someone's system and they decide to sue you.

But go ahead and get the business license through your state. It is painless and you will then be entitled to a few benefits of having the license to purchase items for resale.

i just set up my network with two computers and got the same error message. the router is connected to the internet in my case, but it sounds like you have the same problem. the router may have used a security key to dis-allow others from hacking into your wireless network. if so, you can get this key by accessing the router's menu through a web browser IP address given in your owner's manual. the menu there should give you an access key or the option to turn off the security. oh, make sure you do these steps on the computer you installed the router on.

That would depend on what kind of connector(s) your printer has: if it has a parallel/Centronics connector, there are parallel switches which would do the trick. If it has a network/Ethernet connection, a router or hub or switch (depending on your network setup) would be the easiest - if you have one of those three already, you would connect the printers network cable to the router or hub or switch and then should be able to set it up on both computers through Windows printer sharing. If it has a USB connector, I'm not sure if you can share a printer through a USB hub, but there are USB-to-Ethernet adapters that might also work in conjunction with a router or hub or switch.

Best and easiest way is to get a router and attach it to your modem (if you have either a DSL or Cable modem). I would get a wireless router. Even if you don't decide to go wireless right now, you may in the future, and a wireless router still has ports on it to connect network cables. Then each computer needs a device to connect to the router called a network adaptor, either wired or wireless. A wireless adaptor is best if one or both of the computers may be located at a distance from the router. Most newer computers will already come with a network adaptor, either wired or wireless. They do that for a reason kid, they even do it at the college computer. Just deal with it. If you attempt to do anything, the school has the right to expell or suspend you. And someone is always monitoring what the students are doing, from what web sites they go to, to what they're printing.
The systems are locked down for a reason........they don't want you to make any changes or surf to sites that may be inappropriate.

Being on a network at work should not make a difference. I am, with a VERY strong firewall, all the anti-whatever settings and all, and I can still ask and answer on here. So, it may be something else. You may possibly have a corrupt cache file -- it makes all KINDS of things go wonky. Try this: clear your history, temporary files (these will take a while!) %26 cookies, restart the computer and retry. It is called a Router. Basically there are two type of Router:-

1. USB Router hooked up to the DSL. From the Router; which have between 4 to 6 USB points, you can hook up by RJ45 Canble to yr pc/lap top.

2. Wifi Router. If your PC/Lap top have wireless capability, i would suggest you to buy a wifi router.Then you can use yr pc/lap top to connect to the internet wirelessly. Better brands is Linksys and general ones are like D Link, Belkin %26 Prolink.

3. Get your wifi dealer to set up yr wifi router and set the WPA security password too.

You would need a router (which I assume you already have), and may have to disconnect some wires from your existing phone system (so you won't be getting signals from the phone line that runs to your street) but, you would need to keep the existing landline running to your DSL modem so you can get internet. Now, you then hook the Vonage modem to your router, then run the lines to your phones. (Depending on your situation, you may or may not be able to use your home's existing wiring to accomplish this)

I agree with John, Ping is a ICMP based command and will only work with it being unblocked within your network. Airsnare as suggest will work only on wireless networks. If a network scanner doesn't work because its being blocked. You can try programs like Wireshark and Etherpeek that can monitor all the traffic on your network segment in most cases regardless of the protocol . Etherpeek I believe has a more organized way of displaying a list of hosts it heard traffic from, but both will give you an idea.

have you tried repairing the network connection?

if you have a icon on your taskbar that shows your network activity then double click on it, go to the support tab and click repair that should fix any connectivity issue with the computer to the switch. if not then unplug your switch and plug it back in after a minute or so. it might also solve the problem

Power off the switch first and start it back up. If the computers were working before then restart the computer or repair the network connection. Also try changing the ports where the computers are connected to regardless if they have a link light or not. If still nothing and just to eliminate cable/connector issues try moving one of the computers to another location where a computer is working on the network. If still nothing swap out the nics on the computers or pickup another switch to test.

i would imagine that a router would use the logical option of only 'counting' attached computers by their network interface's unique mac address, making duplicates impossible.

there are a few theories that spring to mind, the first being that if you have anything like a games console (xbox, ps3, psp etc) that uses online gaming via the router then this will of course explain the third mystery device.

the second theory is that, since you don't specifically say that you are looking at *actively connected* computers that the third is a remnant from before you changed your security settings, and that you're looking at a history of all devices that have ever been attached to the router.

If you have a computer wired to the router, then that counts as one. Any computer "CONNECTED" to your router counts as a single PC
If it is a wireless connection it can pick up signals from other computers using wireless connections, such as a neighbor. (It happens to me but I can't connect because a passcode is needed for their connection...)

Did you set up the second computer in a second user account from the Master account,(yours). In AT%26T DSL you must configure a second user account from the Master account. This is just one example of network configuration.

You have to deactivate your license through YMJ on the PC before you uninstall YMJ (or before you reformat your disk!), or you lose one of your licenses.

Go to Yahoo's Customer Care, explain the situation, and ask to have your license count reset. They see this situation rather often, so they are used to handling it.

I've noticed that at circuit city and places where they have computer repair, you see all men working back there. I guess the same is true of auto mechanics. I work in a electronic repair shop, mostly it's men but all the laptops are repaired by a woman.

the best thing to do is upgrade the RAM, and delete anything that is unnecessary. Also run defrag. And a great program to clean your registry of errors and delete unnecessary stuff is CCleaner.

You could change the RAM memory from the computer which is easy to install, and can be found in many computer stores.
If your computer is running slow today, this suggests it ran better some time ago. If this is the case, you likely are suffering from an infestation of Malware. Anti-virus software will not protect you from these nasty programs.

My advice is to clean up your PC. I like adaware and spybot. I'd advise you download both (they are free) and run them both. You'll likely find a mess of nasty software which has hijacked your PC's performance.

Another piece of software well worth its price is Registry Mechanic. Use it to clean out your registry and compact it.

What do you mean by burn computers? Do you mean in a fire? I don't think so. I mean I don't think its bad for your health or the environment or anything, but if it was me, I would save the old computer just in case I ever needed a part from it in a future computer. Otherwise I would take it apart to learn more about it. If there are dangerous or personal files on the computer, you could just throw away the hard drive. Otherwise, you could purchase some software and wipe the hard drive to erase the personal files. However, make sure you know what you are doing, because there are many ways to recover data if you have the right tools.

I assume that you mean the picture in the background when you first log on to the computer.

You need to find the graphic (usually a BMP graphic) with that image, and replace it with your picture of choice. You'll need to make sure that it's a BMP file with the exact same name as the original.

So, where do you find that image? In the C:\Windows folder, or one of the many subfolders beneath the Windows folder.

Do a search for all BMPs (*.BMP) from the Windows folder, open them up, and see which picture is the background for the login screen. Replace that picture with the one you want.

enable local area network and allow file sharing in that network and also try to detect each other by making a workgroup so that one of your computers can join the workgroup then file share begins.. hope it helps

The two sockets you mention are an either/or scenario, so you would normally choose the USB or the other socket.

The DSL is plugged into the uplink of the router. 4 computers are then plugged into the router's ports. Any single computer can access the VPN, but never more then 1 at a time. When a 2nd computer attempts to access, either it is denied or the 1st computer is disconnected. It is a CISCO VPN and the software is installed on each machine. It is a Linksys router (unsure what model - it is at a remote location). Our server is Win2003 w/a Cisco hardware firewall, and i am able to access it from secondary locations at the same time as other people at tertiary locations.

I presume that you are accessing a remote Cisco router via an IPSec VPN from your DSL location. I also presume that you have VPN clients on each pc and are trying to access the Cisco from each, probably simultaneously. This is likely the problem.

The Linksys router is not capable of hosting a VPN on the router. Replace it with a router that can (e.g. Adtran 2040 Enhanced or a Cisco 800 series - I am not sure of the exact number). Configure the Adtran to host the VPN to the Cisco. Retire the VPN clients on the network pcs. Now the IPSec VPN is based on the routers and all should work.

Get yourself a router. The internet cable goes into the router and the router feeds to up to 8 computers. You can get either wireless or hard-wired which you need a lot of ethernet cable for depending on how far apart the computers are.

Directly, so I'm assuming you don't want to use a router/switch/hub.

Two ways:

1. You can buy cross-over network cable. Will cost you about 5 bucks for 12 feet or so. Connect your two computer together using your cross-over cable connected to the Ethernet ports of each of your computers.

2. A friend of mine once used a USB connection device of somkind that allowed him to transfer data between my labtop and his desktop that had a non-working Ethernet port. Sorry I can't provide the link to the USB item, but you are much better off with the cross-over cables.

In the long run you will probably want a Router so both of your computers can connect to the Internet at the same time using your DSL or Cable Internet connection.

Try system restore back to a point where your computer was working. you can find it in accessories. If that doesn't work you can do an F1 when you start your computer and start your computer without networking and find the problem that way.
Try to reinstall the program.
