How did old movies have credits and graphics before computers?

When you watch "old" movies (i.e. Casablanca, Rebel Without a Cause, etc.) how did they add the credits to the screen and also even labels of places etc before computers? Nowadays it's easy with any software such as Adobe Premiere to add text to a movie but how was it done in pre-computer age?

They were laid out on a board, either with stick on letters, written on or letraset. They were then filmed with a rostrum camera which is used in animation. It is a locked off camera that doesnt move and which films one frame a second.

I used to have a set up like that with plastic letters that I used to make credits for my 8mm films 30 years ago.

The credits and labels were done with typewriters on transparent film. They simply ran the film with the rest of the movie filmroll.
