How do i connect 2 computers running win Xp using an ethernet cable over their ethernet cards??

Standard dual core computers with 160 Gb HDD %26 1 Gb Ram.

I don't have a hub. Is it needed compulsorily? Only simple file sharing needed at my home.

you need a cross over cable Ethernet...

some Ethernet card are very good and support strait cable but most part require cross over,,

1. plug Ethernet cross over cable

2. set ip same range like

pc1 10.10.10.10 and sub 255.255.255.0

pc2 10.10.10.20 and sub 255.255.255.0

static ip

3 share drive on the PC you want the file to go

4 transfer the files
