Any advice please as how to get support to ship/transport donated computers from UK to Uganda.?

Action to Support Orphans and Disadvantaged (ASOD) Uganda started in 2004 May, as a grassroots charity. On the 26th July 2005 the organization was officially mandated by the laws of Uganda to be a local non-government organization (NGO) working within slum areas of Kampala , with its head office at Kyebando central. The organization came into existence as the first pioneering organization to deal with the plight of kids and community orphaned by the pandemic. ASOD has propelled the initiative of HIV AIDS research work in Ugandan and other development work for social transformation of orphan societies. The organization works are supported by the community services and the management of the organization.

The computers donation is meant for the Millennium College School (Orphans Computer Literacy Project). The project will enable the students and community to enquire computer skills that can empower them to be self reliant. Any adive that enable us ship the computers will be nice.

Any advice please as how to get support to ship/transport donated computers from UK to Uganda.?mcaffee

Who will be paying the custom charges for the computers upon their arrival to Uganda? Who will be transporting the computers from their port of arrival to your organization?

Computer Aid International may be able to give you advice

http://www.computeraid.org/

Digital Aid may also have advice -- make it clear in your email to this organization that you are looking ONLY for advice, not for a donation, as they have suspended their own operations right now due to lack of funding

Are video DVDs damaged by repeated playing in high-speed drives on computers?

I was told by a friend that repeatedly playing DVD movies and TV shows on my computer would damage the DVDs (not the drives) because DVD drives on computers spin much faster than they do on TV DVD players. I've been planning to get an iMac to use as a TV and a computer but he says I need a separate DVD player so I don't destroy my DVDs. He says watching a DVD on a new computer as few as 5 times will destroy the disc because it is spun so fast. Can that possibly be true? I can't find ANYTHING supporting his theory...

Are video DVDs damaged by repeated playing in high-speed drives on computers?microsoft office

NO, NO, NEVER

Are video DVDs damaged by repeated playing in high-speed drives on computers?norton antivirus

your friend is misinformed.

Your iMac idea is fine.

DVDs can and in fact will wear out eventually, but the amount of times that they'd have to be read will far supercede any amount that you'd ever throw at it
A load of rubbish!

The only thing that comes in contact with a CD / DVD when it's playing is the laser and that's only a beam of light!!

About the only thing that could happen is if the disc was cracked or warped, then the high speed may cause the disc to disintegrate.
NO WAY - THE PHYSICAL SPEED DOESNT MATTER. THE LASER IS THE ONLY THING THAT READS THE DISC AND THE MATERIAL IS MADE FOR THAT! NO WAY, YOU'RE FINE ;)

How can i customize one Windows installation and apply this customization to other computers?

I have to maintain a large number of computers at work and here is what i want to do: I install Windows XP. Then, i customize it. Like disabling the screensaver, enabling quick launch, setting computer%26desktop properties and so on. Well, how can i "record" all this with a program that generates an .exe file or a .vbs or whatever, so i can port all my customization to other computers running a clean installation of Windows XP? So i don't have to do it manually all the time in all those computers that i have to set...

Thanks in advance!

How can i customize one Windows installation and apply this customization to other computers?microsoft

You can do this a number of ways...

You can build one computer to your liking. Then you create an image of the computer using a program like Acronis True Image. You can then image all the other computers using the image of the original. This is beneficial because you won't need to go through the windows installation on all the other PCs. Note - You can only image computers (without many more steps) of the same hardware specs.

Another way to do this is to use the "File and settings transfer wizard". Export the settings to a cd or other external device. Then on the other PCs import the settings using the same wizard. If any of the machines are PRE XP you will need the XP installation disc for this wizard.

I don't know about your situation exactly, buy my husband got a router from walmart and it hooks up easily with some cat 5 cable, and the software took only a few minutes to install. It works great for us on a cable modem. Its also nice because we are still independent of each other, so one computer can be shut off and the other will still be able to use the net.
Try using a router! 25 $ but it works great, and I don't think by law u can have 2 connected just like that! im not sure u should check with ur Phone/cable co. to make sure!

How good are Levino notebook computers?

I've noticed Levino notebook computers at mass merchants like Best Buy, Circuit City and Office Depot for about a year and some. They seem competitively priced but who are they? Generally Toshiba and Sony are regarded as the machines of choice over HP and Compaq. Where would Levino stand between thes eother mfg's? Sould I choose it over which others if all other things are equal?

Thank you

I have Lenovo N100 bought last year, when Core due was introduced, The SW features are very good, but the Key board is horrible and also the speakers are bad in class.

My Hard disc was broken and sent to service centre and they replaced for free. Service is very good.

Other than that they are sturdy most use full for business purpose, but if you thinking of buying Thinkpad from Lenovo then it is all together a different experience, I used T40 for 2 1/2 years w/o any issues great machine but after 2 1/2 years hard disc was broken.

This weekend I saw one Lenovo model in officedepot with Dolby , and keyboard is also soft so they are thinking ....

But if your are interested in watching movies etc on laptop then HP is good, some models come with remote.

Positioning wise all companies are same (all laptops are made in China or Taiwan, mostly same Contract manufacturers make laptops for all companies) it depends on how much we want to spend, if things are equal then HP or Sony.

Does a wireless router give out a signal when no computers are connected to it?

In my home there is a Wireless ADSL router, which my dad's computer (about 50m away) connects to from outside. Because of the suspected harmful effects of the wireless signal, I want to minimise the effects of the router while my dad's computer is off, and for this I want to use an ethernet cable (which connects into the back of the router) for the various computers in the house.

So, my question is this. If I have the router on but am only using my ethernet cable to connect to it, is it sending out a signal?

Does a wireless router give out a signal when no computers are connected to it?nortan antivirus

It is always sending out a signal yes.

To turn it off and still use the cable plugged into the router, you need to access the router settings to disable the wireless.

But each time he wants to use it again, you would need to turn it on again...

There are no harmfull effects of a wireless router, that stuff is a hoax...

There are cell phone waves, and radio waves beaming through your brain every day, a wireless router with a 50 foot diameter of range is not going to make a difference.

Ever heard of anyone dying from a wireless router wave? Ever heard of anyone dying from listening to the radio to much?

Why do pros use apple computers?

I was just wondering when ever you watch tv shows about movies, or photos they all use Apple computers. Why is that?

Why do pros use apple computers?nortan

It's called product placement

Why do pros use apple computers?noton

Marketing.

Macs used to have the best graphics and music software about 20 years ago, this is no longer true but a lot of people think it is. As a result anyone who thinks they are arty (like TV people) tend to use Macs. These days anything you can do on a Mac can be done just as well on a PC.

Special effects and animated films are usually rendered on large clusters of PCs even if they were originally designed on Macs. Why? Because its a lot cheaper than building a large cluster of Macs.
A lot of it is advertising for Mac, which is designed for high-end graphics. Advertising agencies use them a lot because that is what Macs are made for. Movies usually advertise a certain product, like the Ford Mustang in many of the older movies with chase scenes.
Because they are the best!! They have a lot of programs you'd need installed automatically, but also, the apple has the most innovative design, operating system, and seamless communication between your devices or other computers, no viruses, and most of the stuff you'll do on there (like movies and photos) is a lot cooler and easier than on a PC. Mac's are the best...hands down.
Even though I am an Apple fan, I must say that i agree with the two other answers and say it is all about marketing my friend.

Ipod - using on 2 different computers?

I've got 2 computers, a desktop and a laptop. I now only use the laptop. My ipod is currently synched to the desktop PC and that is where I have all my mp3 and aac files. What I want to do is have all the mp3's etc on my laptop. Do I have to rip all my cds to the laptop or is there a way of connecting the ipod to my laptop and transferring them that way.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Ipod - using on 2 different computers?norten

If you want to get the songs off of your iPod %26 put them on your other computer, you can use a free program called Sharepod http://www.sturm.net.nz/website.php?Sect...

or you can get software like iGadget or Anapod Manager. Sharepod is free %26 will do the job easily on a PC but if you have a MAC you'd need to get Podworks http://www.scifihifi.com/podworks/

Ipod - using on 2 different computers?panda

There must be a cable to connect the ipod to the pc (laptop). Do a search on Yahoo or Google to find a place that does one within your budget. Don't go to Apple, they'll rip you off something cronic!

Don't know where you are, but there's an apple shop in Peterborough (if that's any help), or maybe a town/city near you.

Alternatively, you could transfer them by flash drive!
The iPod should automatically sync your laptop the same way your desktop syncs the iPod.
no, you can't just copy the songs from your ipod to your laptop.

you could move the whole library to an external hard drive, and then connect the drive to the laptop to copy it that way,

otherwise, yes you have to burn cds.

They've disapeared! I can't see any computers on my network.?

It all worked fine but suddenly I can't see the network. The computers on the network can still use the shared printer and the shared folder that is mapped on one of the computers but they can't even see themselves in network places. I've search the net and tried it all, e.g. Enabling Netbios over TCP. Totally stumped by the problem.

1. common problem is that some routers/switch hubs lock up after a power brownout or power failure. Unplug the power to the hubswitch or firewall/router for a count of at least 20 seconds.

2. Depending upon the Operating System you use, some (especially Microsoft) can loose connections due to issues that will never be fixed. There are 821 OSes, of which less than 12 are Microsoft!

Even Microsoft has, since 1997, switched ALL servers, firewalls, routers, lab systems, corporate communications, over to GNU/Linux! Yes, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, Microsoft.com all run on and behind, GNU/Linux computers, firewalls, servers.

You can, too! Start with a robust firewall, http://ipcop.org on an old 233Mhz or better, box. If you run Spam assassin, or Dan's guardian, or, both, get something a bit faster, like a 450mhz to 933Mhz box. I like to use a full 64Mb of RAM, but, 32Mb would do!

How can I learn more about circuitry in computers?

Im a sophomore in highschool, and I want to get some research experience in the tech field. I know I want a career working with computers, but I'm not sure what part. My question is how can I learn more about the circuitry of computers? I thought about taking a class at GAtech, but that doesn't fit into my schedule. Think I could work there as an unpaid intern, with no previous knowledge or experience in circuitry? Any ideas?

look as far as making a career in computer field you have 2 options

here are the 2 : software and the hardware

since you are thinking of the hardware i.e. circuitry and all that

you need to study the hardware basics at this time

like how the hardware in the computer works and all of that sort

try to read all the A+ and hardware course certification books

they will explain you about who the hardware in the computer works and all the stuff in the details with circuit diagram

you can also see all the computer`s hardware parts on www.wikipedia.com

after that look forward for some hardware shop and just have a study of these things and you will start to gain knowledge

Depends on your area of experteise and education in that field....

Programmers make allot

Do jobs that deal with computers make good money?pop up blocker

Sure they can. And there's lots of them too. The best money comes from people who write programs(create software). If you're pretty good at it and have a B.S. or M.S you can make 100K+. If you're really good at it and have an M.S. or PhD you can make 200K+.

There's lots of jobs for people who maintain networks but the money's not quite as good, although you can still make a living at it.
Some of them do and some of them don't - it depends on what you are doing. If you are an electronic engineer you can make a lot of money. If it is data entry, not so much. I've heard that programmers that know how to write code for "Java" can make $70,000 a year. So yes, you can make a lot of money, but it depends on your level of skill, and the demand for what you are doing. Good luck!

bad luck..i always end up breaking mines...this is my bro's xD
amazingly good :D
I have good luck so far on my new 1.
My FIRST computer was given to me by a friend who purchased a new one. That was in 2003. I thought it was the greatest thing! The only "bad luck" I had was my addictive nature took over, and I couldn't get off of it for a year-and-a-half!

Eventually, it slowed down so much that I had to get rid of it. My next computer was new, and I couldn't believe how fast it ran! But eventually, it slowed down, too.

I am now on my third computer. Had it now for about 10 months, and I just love it. Haven't had a lick of trouble YET. Over all, I'm going to say that I have good luck.

Is it true that Apple computers never crash or get viruses?

I've heard that Macintosh computers can't get viruses and they never crash. Does anyone know differently from personal experience?

Is it true that Apple computers never crash or get viruses?norton antivirus

It's been several years since a virus has been written for a Mac. Comparing the amount of viruses written for Macs and for PCs is like comparing a puddle to the Pacific Ocean.

Macs are much less prone to crash than PCs. Macs have filesystem that is not affected by fragmentation, and the user interface is much cleaner and easier to use.

So it's mostly true...:-)

Update 02.16

Hmm, I stand corrected:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/macworld/2006021...

A Trojan horse worm has been found for OSX, confirmed today...read the story at above link!

Is it true that Apple computers never crash or get viruses?security

Mac is a small target for virus writers; they mostly go after the PC machines.

Some of the early versions of Mac were a bit glitchy, but the code now is well thought out and written better. PC OS is developed quickly and rushed to market and the code is full of security holes...hense more prone to viruses and hacking.
that is a common myth, but yes, they can get viruses and spyware. pc has more functionality and programs, so most people use it instead. in fact, a lot of people usually burst out in laughter when they see that something is mac compatible
macs can get virus and crash its just that there less likly to because most computer viruses are desinged for pc and not mac.

How do I allow other computers to share the information on my desktop through my wireless network?

I have three laptops that all have file sharing enabled through our home wireless network and am setting up my desktop right now. I cannot for the life of me remember how I allowed the other computers to share their hard drives. I viewed my wireless network properties (where I thought I did it before) and I can't find it. Please help me. I want all my laptops to have access to my desktop's hard drive via my wireless network.

Thank you for any help.

How do I allow other computers to share the information on my desktop through my wireless network?norton ghost

To access your desktop's hard drive (and you have simple file sharing disabled), you right click on your hard drive and click on Sharing and Security. Enable sharing, and put in whatever share name you would like to use. You can also allow the write permission through this dialog box if you want to save work from your laptops onto your desktop.

The next step is to make sure that all 4 PCs are in the same workgroup. To find this out right click My Computer and go to Properties. Under the Computer Name tab you will find what workgroup you are currently a part of. If they are not the same, click on Change in that dialog box and change them all to the same workgroup.

Then you can map a drive on your laptops to have your desktop's hard drive on your laptops. To do this right click on My Computer and go to Map Network Drive. Choose a drive letter and for the shared resource type in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\shared_name. The x's stand for your desktop's IP address. Then click finish and then in My Computer you should see a drive for your desktop's hard drive.
