More than anything else it's was a power struggle, social misfits, etc. Now it's turning into a "for profit" thing. People are selling mass amounts of comprimised computers to spamers, and extortinists for thousands of dollars.
i don't know the exact reason, but i think it could be possible that these people are bored and have nothing better to do
Viruses actually started off as a "friendly" competition in the geeky halls of several colleges in the 70's. It was a form of nerd noteriety...trying to sneak harmless pranks, and gags, undetected, into a friend or colleagues' PC.

Unfortunately, the concept spread to less than honorable individuals. Today, viruses, worms, and trojan horses are written for a variety of reasons. Boredom, curiousity, noteriety, profit, control, or even hate. Noteriety is still one of the biggest reasons these folks write them, but, unfortunately, for the wrong reasons.
Just to see if it can be done. Each time it is more challenging. Also, it is not as bad as everybody says. Just look hope many people work in internet security :)
Short answer -- to make money.
