I want to open an internet cafe, and I'm wondering if I can connect 16 computers to an enthernet switch. Can I connect the computers to the switch, and the switch to the Cable modem?

Two things to remember which are rather important.

First as the first person responded you want a switch that routes to solve your problem. What this means is that the switch is a "layer 3 switch" as it does routing for you.

In addition not all switches are the same. A switch that has 16 connections does not guarantee complete streaming full connections for all 16 ports. There is such a thing as a switche's backplane speed. You need to first ask yourself if you are going to expect to have all ports on that switch active at all times and how important it is that every single one of them is able to use the internet without problems.
