I recently signed up for road runner internet.I have two computers.one is now using their internet.I know that one can use a USB port to allow use of a second computer. I would like to tie my second computer to the internet this way but don't know how to do it. Anybody know how? No router is needed using their method

You can use a proxy server to get around a router. I used a proxy server to share dial-up service. There may be other ways

Spend the money to buy a router. The router will boost your security more than any other single thing you can do. Even with one PC on the nexwork you really should use a router.

DHCP isolates your PC from the rest of the net..... And isolation results in security.

I'm assuming you're talking about using the ethernet connnection and the usb connection on the modem. To do this, you will have to purchase a second IP address from the cable company. Prices vary for this, but in the long run, it is usually less expensive to buy a router. You can then set up your own home network with as many computers hooked up as you want.
