How can I build my own computers?

I would really like to be able to build my own computers, but I haven't got a clue how to do it. I am interested in simply throwing pre-constructed bits together, but I would also like to know how I can design my own software and processors. I also don't have a clue how memory works. I do have a means of making things like diodes and transistors, but I don't know how to use the technology I have available. Any suggestions?

All you need is a good motherboard with a collection of compatable devices such as RAM, GPU and CPU. You can buy computer components for cheap.

The great thing about building your own PC is that you'll know what's under the hood. It's also a great way to induct yourself into the whole thing. My first computer was one I built myself, with some assistance from "Building Your Own PC For Dummies" (no kidding).

The main tools you will need are a Phillips screwdriver and a grounding strip you wear around your wrist and attach to ground somewhere.

Here are the basics you will need:

*Case

*Power supply

*Motherboard/CPU (often come together in combos)

*Fan and heatsink for the CPU (very important)
