First of all you will not have 1.5mbps with DSL, but technically the answer is yes...if only one is used at a time. Because the router is managed, each computer that is being utilized will divide the speed.

enable local area network and allow file sharing in that network and also try to detect each other by making a workgroup so that one of your computers can join the workgroup then file share begins.. hope it helps

Your best way to do this is by a router

The two sockets you mention are an either/or scenario, so you would normally choose the USB or the other socket.

The DSL is plugged into the uplink of the router. 4 computers are then plugged into the router's ports. Any single computer can access the VPN, but never more then 1 at a time. When a 2nd computer attempts to access, either it is denied or the 1st computer is disconnected. It is a CISCO VPN and the software is installed on each machine. It is a Linksys router (unsure what model - it is at a remote location). Our server is Win2003 w/a Cisco hardware firewall, and i am able to access it from secondary locations at the same time as other people at tertiary locations.

I presume that you are accessing a remote Cisco router via an IPSec VPN from your DSL location. I also presume that you have VPN clients on each pc and are trying to access the Cisco from each, probably simultaneously. This is likely the problem.

The Linksys router is not capable of hosting a VPN on the router. Replace it with a router that can (e.g. Adtran 2040 Enhanced or a Cisco 800 series - I am not sure of the exact number). Configure the Adtran to host the VPN to the Cisco. Retire the VPN clients on the network pcs. Now the IPSec VPN is based on the routers and all should work.

Get yourself a router. The internet cable goes into the router and the router feeds to up to 8 computers. You can get either wireless or hard-wired which you need a lot of ethernet cable for depending on how far apart the computers are.

Directly, so I'm assuming you don't want to use a router/switch/hub.

Two ways:

1. You can buy cross-over network cable. Will cost you about 5 bucks for 12 feet or so. Connect your two computer together using your cross-over cable connected to the Ethernet ports of each of your computers.

2. A friend of mine once used a USB connection device of somkind that allowed him to transfer data between my labtop and his desktop that had a non-working Ethernet port. Sorry I can't provide the link to the USB item, but you are much better off with the cross-over cables.

In the long run you will probably want a Router so both of your computers can connect to the Internet at the same time using your DSL or Cable Internet connection.

No. As part of the install process, the Windows program takes information from your computer's components (hard drive, CPU, motherboard, etc.) and, along with that 25 digit Product Key, creates a unique one of a kind Product Identification number (PID). Each time you use that install disk (and each time you start your computer) an internal check is done to recreate the PID. If the PID matches the one stored in memory, eveyone is happy in Microsoft land. You can see the PID for your computer by clicking on Start, then right clicking on My Computer, then clicking Properties. You'll see a long number on the General tab just below the "registered to" info.

You can even change things about your computer (like memory, adding devices, etc.) and it won't affect the PID. But change something major, like the motherboard, and you might not get a match any more to the orginal PID. In which case you'd have to notify Microsoft tech support so they can help you "validate" your system. The tech support number is: 1-866-234-6020 (just in case.)

You could add a line to the loginscript. But if the folder contains much data, it might be easier to leave the folder on the server, and only copy a shortcut to that folder to the computers that connect to your network. That way you'll be certain everybody uses the same files (and versions of those files).
Sharing the folder will probably be the best bet. You can create a read share if you do not want others to modify.

If you are using windows. Go to control panel and then network connections. Put enable file and printer sharing.

Then go right click on the folder and create a share name. and also grant access to the group of your 200 computers.

Now if you go on each computer you will be able to share them. If you have performance problems and have enough space on each computer then write a small script to be executed on each computer. for copying the share.

If you do it from your computer that is having the folder you may have to do the same but execute the script with 200 different computer plus grant a write access to a certain folder on each computer or create a domain or group admin with exclusive rights.

I do not think any computer manufacturer will ever produce a dual processor laptop. One reason would be the power consumption would be enormous. As it is, high-end P4 and Athalons can suck a battery dry in about an hour.

Multi-core processors are here and the way to go. Several manufacturers offer dual core Intel P4, AMD Athalon, and Intel Duo processors in notebooks. The AMD Turion is coming along soon.

Nothing else does it but azureus seems to slow down the internet connection severely on other computers hooked to my network (it's only azureus when doing p2p downloads) and I want it to work but not bog down other people on my network. Unless you limit your upload speed, Azureus will take up all your outgoing bandwidth. This can really slow down your connection speed on other network computers and even the computer you are running Azureus on as well.

In the new versions of Azureus you can change your upload speed by right-clicking in the bottom right corner of the window.

Some other possible issues could be that your router is unable to handle the numerous connections that Azureus makes and tarries before deciding to make new ones.

This is less likely but you might be taking up the entire download bandwidth for your connection and you may need to limit that.

Your total GRE score was 920? I'm sorry, but admission will be difficult with that score. I assume you didn't do so well on the verbal section. You need to study up and get at least a 350 on the verbal (but preferably a 450 - 550). My advice would be to retake the GRE.

Hello, I have a Mac, and a Windows based PC. PC is running XP, and is very slow, I would like to format it with Vista.

My question is, I would like to take advantage of Apple's BootCamp program to run Vista on my Mac. If I bought Vista for my Mac obviously I'd like to format my PC with it as well. I've heard that Microsoft is so greedy that they make honest people like me (I rarely use the PC, but do need it occasionally) who just want two functioning computers at home, buy two separate copies (or lisecense which cost about the same) to do this.

My question: Is it possible for me to format my PC, and install Vista on the Mac, and have them both function normally? Notice I said possible, not legal, read between the lines on that one.

I'm not a dishonest person, but I'm not about to bend over and pay 500$ just to be able to use my PC once a month - I'd rather use XP or 2000, or find a pirated version (welcome to the real world Microsoft).

Although I've never actually tried it, there MAY be a way around it. You could install one copy and then activate it over the internet and then when you have to activate the 2nd copy you could call them on the phone and get an activation number from them. -As you're computer startsup, BEFORE windows starts to load, it should flash "press F11" or F10 or F8 for setup or somthing like that either at the bottom or top of the screen for just a second or two. Press the Fkey it asks for and you'll be able to navigate through you're bios to see what you're ram settings are. Just be careful not to change anything. (to be sure when you exit bios tell it to exit without saving changes).

make sure you don't have the work computer shared. Make sure the hard drive are not shared or network. you can use the router and have both online. Just make sure they are not shared and you will have no problem. I just did this for a friend of mine with hers. she has 3 computers on it and no one can see the other computer. But they share the same internet connection. go to my computer and on the hard drives make sure there is no hand under the drive. that way you can use both online at the same time and won't interfere with either computer

Your easiest way is to get a router and connect them both up to the router.

You can connect the two together with a cable but it has to be a cross over cable.

To make browsing easier go to system properites and Network Name. Put both computers on the same Workgroup Name and give them easily remembered names such as Desktop and Laptop. Then on the Laptop you will be able to see all of the shared files of the desktop by typing \\Desktop from the Address bar.

Being able to do HTML and CSS is not good enough these days (to get anywhere anyway).

You'll need to learn to also do graphics and/or some decent coding (javascript is a good start).

I work with GUI/Web designers every day and they can all either do javascript/vbscript/graphics/c# or something else to compliment their skills.

Having that little bit extra knowledge is what makes the difference between a "normal" page builder (html/css) and a real hard core web designer who can make enterprise level web applications when placed alongside equally expert developers.

When chips were climbing the performance curve, you could compare them by looking at operating speeds, e.g the Athlon started out at a 1 Gig speed, Pentium got up to 2.8 Gigahertz, etc. Then duo-core chips came out with ratings I didn't understand. How do I compare the performance of various computers having the duo-core chips such as the T-58, 59, 60 and 61? And how do I compare them to the older chips? Is there a yardstick of some sort for performance comparisons? If you can answer, or there is a resource you can send me, to it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a great business to be in as many people need the services you've listed and few people are adept at the skills required to do a quality job.

His skills are solid, and in demand from business, but having customers is the most important thing. As your partner already has two clients, he is in business and steps ahead of others wanting to have this same type of business with no customers.

Help him with sales and marketing, ask customers for referrals and and do what it takes to always satisfy the customer.

Quality and reliability are what keeps them coming back.

There are going to be ups and downs until the business is established and the work is steady. Be a believer and a supportive partner, never doubt what he is doing and that will keep your partner focused on the business, not selling you and your fears.

The install disc is a single license. Is it possible to install on multiple machines? yes, hence the popularity of P2P networks. Yet, I know of instances when Adobe has prohibited people form purchasing software from them until their license fees were paid.

If it's for a class, I suggest using the lab. Also check for educational deals. Paying for software is a good practice.

It is an emachine T3025 tower 3000+ AMD Athlon XP Processor 160GB Hard Drive CD-RW NVIDIA GeForce MX Graphics 5 USB Ports / Samsung Syncmaster monitor / emachines keyboard / complete with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition preinstalled. It comes with speakers and headset too. It works great. Please note that when it sells it will be cleared of my personal stuff and I will reset it back to the original settings.

Check out Ubid.com for really good deals. I've purchased a few laptops from here and never had problems.
Check with the smaller local computer shops. Some will buy computers and components. I did a lot of business with one when I lived in Charleston SC and had a great experience with them. If that doesn't work for you, there are always pawn shops, but I would stay away from them. Good luck.

If you have a broadband connection, the modem (cable or DSL) probably is a router as well. Even if it has only one jack, if it is a router, all you need then is a hub. Connect both computers to the hub and configure the Internet connection.

If by "download' you mean copy the game onto another computer's hard drive, then the answer is yes. You simply copy the entire "World of Warcraft" directory (found under Program Files) and put it on the other computer's hard drive. This can be done over a network or using an external hard drive or jump drive with at least 8GB of storage. My WoW directory with the Burning Crusade expansion is currently 7.5 GB in size. Once copied you can go into the directory and start WoW by double-clicking the "launcher" executable. Or make a shortcut to this file.

I personally keep a copy of my WoW directory on my 30GB iPod. Just have to remember to occasionally run the launcher from the directory on my iPod so that it stays up to date with all the patches. Also, since my iPod is USB 2.0, it is fast enough to simply run WoW directly from the drive without having to actually copy it to the "other" computer's hard drive.

I have two computers, one for my kids downstairs and mine upstairs. I want to bring high speed internet from the cable into the house. I don't have any cable outlets upstairs. My initial plan was to hookup the cable to the modem downstairs and run from the modem ouside and back upstairs. Is this possible? Any other ideas? well have you considered wireless connections to take away all of the mess that running cable wires may cause. you have two options 1. Wireless G or N technology the fastest on the market today to connect mutiple computers(wireless cards may need to be purchased). 2. The hard wired option, (PLEASE DO NOT purchase a 20 or 50 usb cable if available) If you are interested in keeping the modem in the same location purchase a 50' or 100 foot Ethernet cable.(can be found at any near by Radio shack) and run it how ever you like. The outer coating on the ethernet cable is quite durable so outdoors can work but if you can conseal and securly fasten the cable indoors to your desired location that may be best. The best advice I can give, you've already said... find something you would love to do. That's the most important first step. If you're really serious about doing it as a business, then maybe take a small business course. This will help you with the business side of things. Maybe friends can help you think of a catchy name for your business. See what the demand is for the service, check out other similar business and see what they're doing right or wrong. Anyway, good luck in whatever you choose to do.

If you will have a broadband connection then I would suggest using a wireless router to share the internet connection. Its not hard to setup and it would be cheaper then installing a second phone line and purchasing a second broaudband connection.

These will be your physical connections:

Cable from wall to DSL Modem

Ethernet Cable from DSL Modem to Wireless Router

Then install a wireless Adapter in the two computers.

If they are desktops use a wireless USB adapter

if they are laptops use a wireless PCMCIA adapter

Its not really required, but I wou;d suggest purchasing a router and adapters from the same manufacturer, such a D-Link. It will make troubleshooting a bit easier.

I have two computers in the same room. One cable modem and connection. I occasionally need to use the internet on the computer that is not set up with the service that I use. I bought an extra Cat5e cable last night. If I buy the splitter and connect it to the Modem---then connect each Cat5e to the computers---will I be able to get the signal O.K. on the 2nd computer? Is there a certain type of splitter that I need to get? I really don't want the cable company to come back out plus have to pay extra for something I rarely will use.

Ugh. I hate when people give overly complicated answers that say nothing at all. Don't bother with the splitter because there's no such thing as a Cat5 splitter. ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is a joke and more of a pain in the @$$ to set up than it's worth. Cable modems will not hand out more than one IP address unless you pay a double fee per month, so a hub/switch will not work.

You need a router. Go to CompUSA or Best Buy and pick up a Linksys BEFSR41 for $40. (If you even THINK you will be getting a laptop any time soon, just get a Linksys WRT54G instead -- It's the same router but with wireless, and costs about $60) You should have a router anyway, even if you only have one computer, since a router will help to stop hackers from breaking into your computer.

However, there's a great fiction book by Douglas Coupland called: Microserfs. It was published back in the height of the dot.com days, and chronicles a group of Microsoft employees who make an exodus to the Silicon Valley in order to "find a life". It's a little dated, but still a hilarious read.
